Chapter 14

She’d packed few items for this trip, which meant her clothing was done in just a few minutes. The diamonds came next, but those didn’t go in her checked luggage. She would never trust them out of her immediate possession, and in fact, she would wear a couple of the more discreet pieces, just to be safe.

Except when she pulled the jewelry roll out of the hidden seam in the bottom of her garment bag, it felt lighter than it should have been.

With her heart in her throat, Caryn rolled the black velvet out on the bed. The rings were first, sparkling even in the spare light of her hotel room. Then came the bracelet. It was delicate and elegant, with white gold settings that were worth almost as much as the stones. She loved it so much, she’d almost worn it when she’d gone down to the casino. But the bracelet wasn’t what she was looking for.

The necklace…wasn’t there.
