Ricky hits the ground and screams. He attempts to fire the gun wildly, but no bullets fire from the chamber, and by the time he starts uttering a curse, it’s too late. Jayden’s teeth close around Ricky’s neck. Blood sprays out and over the ground as Jayden rips out Ricky’s throat.


There’s a gurgling sound from what’s left of Ricky’s throat, and then his whole body goes lax.


Elijah rushes over to Joshua. “Are you all right?” Elijah goes to work on the ropes binding his father to the tree.


“He was hiding in my car. He hit me over the back of the head. I can’t believe I didn’t see him hiding.” Joshua shakes his head and winces.


“But are you all right?” Elijah asks, freeing his dad’s hands.


“I’ll be fine. What happened to his gun?” Joshua asks, and then he looks over Elijah’s shoulder.


Elijah looks too. Chogan is standing there frozen.


“You’re a witch,” Elijah says. It’s not a question. He’s sure that what Ricky said was true.
