Perhaps in giving that to a child like Tony, I might receive a little in return. And perhaps that little bit was what my heart needed. And perhaps, in helping Tony, a little bit of Noah would live on.

“There you are,” Jackson said, coming into the room.

I was standing in the window, looking at the snow.

“Wiley, I’m so sorry.”

“Why is he even here?” I asked.

He didn’t need me to specify whom

“Well…”

“Well, what?” I demanded.

“Now don’t get mad.”

“You invited him?”

“I sort of let it slip that we’d be in town. I didn’t think he’d come over unannounced.”

“You told your old boyfriend we were going to be in town? Did you tell him we were doing a visitation with a child that we might possibly want to adopt?”

“Well, no.”

“No?”

“I just wanted to see some of my old friends, Wiley.”

“And you had to pick that one.”

“I’d forgotten he was so—”
