Chapter 46

“There’s this kid in Boston—the one we went to have a visitation with. His name is Tony. He’s an awesome little sweetie—and he needs us.”

“Well, he could come here. They do have airplanes, or at least they did the last time I checked.”

“Jack’s parents want us to move there. They’re giving us this big apartment thing they own. And Jack wants to move there. He hates it here. And he never promised to stay in Mississippi forever, so I feel like…”

“You got to follow your man?”

“Yes.”

“Well, baby, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, but I hope you give me some time. Do you know how hard it is to find an interpreter for the deaf in a place like Tupelo, Mississippi? Lord, child, what a nightmare. You’re going to give me time, right?”

“Two weeks?”

“Two weeks? I can’t even get an ad written in that amount of time, much less hire someone.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Oh, don’t be sorry, baby. Just give me a month. Two, even!”

“I can’t.”
