Ruby and I watched.
“You were Clara Foster’s only real choice,” Ruby said to me. “She met with several other couples, but she liked you and Jackson the most. That’s what she always said.”
“That’s very flattering,” I said.
“She wasn’t just thinking about money,” Ruby added. “She wanted Amelia to be with a couple that would really love her, really take to her, and give her a happy life. Money helps, of course, but it’s not everything, and she didn’t care whether they were rich or poor. I think she saw something in you and your partner that she didn’t see in other couples.”
“Mental illness, most likely.”
“Oh, she loved your sense of humor!”
“Who says I was kidding?”
“If you want the truth, I think she picked you precisely because you’re gay. She was sexually abused as a child, and…well, I guess she thought Amelia was safest with a couple of gay men.”
“But sexual abuse isn’t about sex,” I pointed out.
