Chapter 72

“My dad’s gone.”

“Jack, I’m so sorry.”

“But we were just there to see him tonight!”

He began to cry in a wounded, quiet sort of way, as if he didn’t trust himself to cry.

I cradled him in my arms.

“We were just there!” he said again after a minute, pulling away from me, wiping at his eyes. “I knew this was coming, but…”

He fell silent.

“Is there anything I can do?” I asked.

“I need to go to see my mom.”

“We’ll come with you.”

“No.”

He dressed quickly, would not look at me.

Though we’d been married for several years—legally married, husband and husband, the whole ball and chain—he was oddly reluctant to share his feelings with me. He was not an emotional person. He stuffed his feelings inside as though they were unworthy nuisances to be endured and nothing more. It seemed rather Protestant to me.

“Are you okay?” I asked.
