I touched his knee.
He glanced up, startled.
Are you hungry?I asked.
His lips quivered fearfully.
Are you okay, Little T.?
He stared at me through those ill-fitting glasses as if he did not know me.
I put my hand on his knee.
He jerked away, spilling his dinosaur book onto the floor in his haste.
No!he signed frantically. No! No! You!
I eased back on my haunches, watched him, tried to convey with my facial expression that there was no need to be afraid.
“Hmmmm!” he keened suddenly, a stricken look in his eyes. He clenched his jaw, squeezed his fists together as if bracing for something.
It’s okay,I signed.
“Ahhhh!” he moaned, shrinking away from me.
I eased myself back from him. I did this very slowly, very gently, not wanting to startle him further.
“Hmmmmm!”
It’s okay,I signed again, slowly, carefully, adding a smile to show him everything was all right.
His eyes darted back and forth as his chest rose and fell in quick, shallow breaths.
