Chapter 90

I…seven.

That’s right. You are seven years old. Can you sign your name?

My name…T-o-n-y.

That’s right. Your name is T-o-n-y. It’s nice to meet you, T-o-n-y.

Miss Dawn held out her hand.

Hesitantly, Tony allowed his hand to be shaken.

Miss Dawn carefully folded Tony’s hand in both of her own, offering a bright smile as she held on to him for a long moment.

“Told you,” Miss Dawn said to me. “But we’ll take it very slow and easy. Don’t you worry, Mr. Cantrell.”

She touched Tony gently on the arm. Do you want to meet the other students?

He glanced around the schoolroom fearfully.

It’s okay, she said gently. You can meet them later. You can sit down over there.

She pointed to a vacant desk.

Tony adjusted his glasses as he looked at the desk. He glanced up at me, as if to see whether I would follow.
