“I lost my husband this year,” she said in a frank tone. “I’m not going to lose my only grandson too. There are limits, you know.”

“Why don’t you go home and get some rest?” she suggested.

“I’m not leaving!”

“Then why don’t you go sit with him? He needs you, Wiley.”

“He needs to get his butt out of that bed.”

“That too. But he needs his daddy right now. He needs to be reminded that he has something to fight for.”

“I’m not going to sit by his bed and watch another child of mine die,” I blurted out.

“So that’s the problem.”

“I can’t do it.”

“Yes, you can. If there’s anyone in this world who can do it, it’s you, Wiley. And you know it. So stop being a poopy pants.”

“And what if he dies?”

“You don’t know that’s going to happen.”
