“You may want to go home and rest and come back in the morning.”

“He could be gone by the morning!” she snapped.

“I don’t think so,” Doctor Coley said. “If this round of antibiotics doesn’t help, there are other things we can do, but it gets riskier as we go along. Please, folks. I don’t think he’s in any immediate danger. You might want to rest while you have the chance and come back in the morning, and we’ll have a clearer picture of where we are.”

He excused himself and disappeared through a nearby door.

“I’ll stay with him,” I said. “Jack, you should take them home. But when you come back, would you bring one of his teddies? And his dinosaur book?”

“You going to be all right by yourself?” Jackson asked, his tired eyes looking worried.

“I’ll be fine,” I said. “Mama, you should go and get some sleep.”

“How am I going to sleep?” Mama asked. “I’m going to wait here for you, in case you need something.”

“No, you should go, Mama.”
