I hadn’t realized what a big deal Mary was. Folks had always talked about Elvis coming out of Tupelo, or Tammy Wynette coming out of Tremont, but now they were talking about Mary Cantrell coming out of New Albany. It was hard for me to take such talk seriously. It was Marythey were talking about, after all, my favorite niece (well, my only niece), a girl I’d known since the day she was born. It was hard to believe Mary was well and truly on her way to becoming a star.
