Chapter 9

Emma had finally opened her eyes just before visiting hours ended, and he had explained everything to her. Well, almost everything. He didn’t tell her about the dismantled alarms, or the probable sedatives. They wouldn’t let him stay in her room, and they wouldn’t let her leave. The night would be long enough without filling her mind with new fears. But Emma was smart, and more than that, she could feel the anger and fear he was desperately trying to hold back.

When Jesse finally emerged from the bathroom, Gideon wasn’t waiting for him. A note beside the television let him know that Gideon planned to return within the hour. It didn’t give any other details, though. Jesse guessed Gideon wasn’t actually going out to work, but he didn’t know what else would have driven him from the hotel room. Especially given the way he’d insisted on staying within touching distance of him and Emma all afternoon and evening.
