Chapter 6

Charlie had always been like that when he was younger. He was so seldom in trouble, and yet whenever something went wrong, he would always try and take the blame for it, even when it was quite clear that there was no way he could have committed the crime. It was almost as if he couldn’t stand the atmosphere that arose whenever there was conflict, couldn’t bear to be in the middle of strife between people he cared for. Jude had always loved him for that, though, at times, he had wished that the boy had occasionally been guilty of the things he owned up to. It would have made him seem more like a normal kid, would have made him seem more like—
