“Jude said that, ah, that Charlie might think that he’s a girl.”

Marta looked at her sharply and she wasn’t sure how to interpret the other woman’s expression, wasn’t sure if she was angry or embarrassed, protective or sad. And who are you to blame her, Sally Schmidt?she thought to herself. She’d never been a mother; she’d never even really had that much contact with children, save for the ones that came into the library and made a noise or her two younger cousins, and she wasn’t sure that either of those really counted.
