Chapter 17

“All three of us come from kind of lonely backgrounds. Don’t go blushing like that, Luke. It’s cute, but it’s true. I can’t promise it will work out, but if it does, we’ll have built something good and healthy for us. Something our families couldn’t provide, something stable. Isn’t that worth striving for?”

Luke looked into Evan’s eyes. He couldn’t hear that little bit of roughness in Evan’s voice without being affected in some way. We weren’t encouraged to ‘get attached.’” He sucked in his cheeks as he tried to think of a way to frame his thoughts. “But I’m already attached, I guess. I just have to learn how to show it, right?” He took a deep breath and smiled. “I’m in.”
