“She is visibly ill. And you just exacerbated it. I am a nurse. I know what I saw. I am not an attorney, but he is.” She jerked a thumb toward Nick. “I am positive that he can tell you all about the different ways you can be held liable for knowingly exposing someone to harm in that way.”

Nick’s responding grin was wolfish. “Pull up a chair, Bruce. I’ve got all day.”

Evan glanced over at Sarah. “If you’re a nurse, would you mind checking on Luke’s mom? I know they haven’t been close, but I don’t think he’d want to lose her like this.”

“Absolutely.” Sarah ruffled Nick’s hair as she trotted past.

Bruce sat down at the table, taking Luke’s vacated spot. Nicole rummaged through the cupboards and brought him a place setting, complete with a glass.

Evan glanced at her. “Really?”

“Well, he’s got to be here until we figure out how sick the mom is. He might as well eat.”

Evan shrugged. “I guess you’ve got a point. Besides, Luke still loves him, so I guess we do have to feed him.”
