We finished the concert and went backstage, where Casey immediately rounded on me. “What the fuck, Nick?”

“What?”

“Why would you do that?”

I looked around at Kennedy and Levi, who both avoided eye contact.

“I hadn’t apologized to you about what happened, so—”

“So, you decided to call me out in front of twenty thousand people?!”

“No! It was supposed to be nice.” I looked pleadingly at him. “It was the song we wrote together. I thought you would know how much I meant it if I…I’m sorry if I did it wrong.”

“Well, now people are going to wonder what the fuck is going on.”

“It could just be that I called you a name or something.”

He shook his head, then grabbed his flask from his pocket. “God, why is it always so complicated with you?”
