“You are a vampire now,” said the Queen, her voice calm, matter of fact.

Confusion was his first reaction to that bald statement. He? A vampire? Then he remembered the taste of Lucretious’ blood, strong and strange, and shivered. Everything made a crazy sort of sense all of a sudden.

“There have been vampires among the Queen’s Own before this, so this changes nothing as far as I am concerned. But it will inevitably change your life in at least some ways.”

“I…I don’t even know…” Kelwyn trailed off, not knowing what to say, how to feel, what to think. He’d thought that a gutter rat like himself being in the Queen’s Own had seemed absurd, but the idea of him being a vampire, a magical, immortal being of massive power, was utter madness.
