Chapter 44

“I nearly got myself killed because I over-reacted to the thought of you dying. Lucretious wasn’t going to kill you again. I could have—should have—gone back to the Tower, gotten some of the others to come help me, and dealt with him properly. Hell, there are three different paladins or priests of one kind or another in the Queen’s Own, they could have dealt with him handily. Instead you almost had to kill me. I…I can’t even imagine putting such a burden on you.”

“I’m sorry,” said Kelwyn softly.

“No! This isn’t me blaming you, none of this was your fault. I let what happened last night affect me too much. I…I should know better. But I’ve been being foolish about you for ages now.” He sighed softly. “Foolish about the past. Foolish to think that I could guard my heart.”

“Do you want to tell me about it?” Kelwyn pulled back a little bit, finally, to look at Harun. Harun’s feline face was harder to read than a human’s would have been, but his expression certainly wasn’t a happy one.
