Chapter 71

The guardsmen looked surprised when Harun insisted on coming along, but they didn’t object. They went to the guard headquarters in the Tower itself, on one of the lower levels. The guard asked Kelwyn and Harun to wait in a small, windowless chamber there. It had a mirror on one wall, and Harun knew that they were likely being watched through it.

Kelwyn knew this as well, and sat still, yawning as he waited and doing his best to stay awake and upright. The closed in, windowless nature of the room was probably meant to be oppressive and intimidating, but Harun found himself thinking that they’d do better, if they wanted Kelwyn to be uncomfortable, to have him in a room where the sunlight would be coming in.

In a low voice, knowing he was probably being overheard anyway, Harun said, “Do you know why they wanted to talk to you?”

Kelwyn yawned again. “Not a clue. I been good since joining the Queen’s Own, and I kinda got other things on my mind since quitting, you know?”
