Chapter 43

“Let me look,” Lorena said, peeking her head in the door. “You stand guard.”

Two minutes later she left Howard’s office.

“He’s at that bachelor pad at the marina,” Lorena said. “If he plans on cleaning it today, we’re not going to see him for a few hours.”

As if on cue the main line rang. Lorena walked to Howard’s desk, grateful that she could answer the main line from there.

“Chidworth Home Services. How may I help you?” she said into the telephone. “Oh, Mr. Sterling, it’s so wonderful to hear from you.”

Jason had followed her to the phone and listened with bated breath.

“Oh, I see,” Lorena said. “Did you want to tell him yourself?”

She was silent again, listening to the other end. Jason waited to see if he would have to talk to Howard. Could he do it without sounding guilty?

“Okay, well, I’ll certainly tell him. Um, Mr. Sterling, do you uh need any back up there? I mean, I could come help you, or Jason could. Really, we wouldn’t mind.”
