Chapter 27

Voices erupted in laughter from time to time, but mostly there was a low level of chatter that Josh guessed was focused on the future of the pack.

While the alpha was the head of the pack, the elders balanced that power with their numbers. Few werewolves survived to the age of being considered elders. From what Josh’s mother had told him, Silverbane’s pack was unique for many reasons, including the fact that it was composed of three central families. Each family was ruled by two or three elders who had survived harsh years with little to hunt, rogues that threatened the pack, and all manner of tainted creatures that fed on werewolf as well as human blood. These elders had survived the violence that was inherent in the werewolf life.
