Chapter 35

“How are you here if you are dead?” Bryce asked.

“Shouldn’t you be on your last hunt?”

“Dead? Yes. Last hunt? No.” The apparition grew more distinct and its face was etched with anger. “I could never abandon my family. Silverbane was stronger than me. I accept that, but his rule only weakened this family. The ancestor wolves howl their disapproval and would not let me enter the final Hunt until I found a way to restore the greatness of our blood line. Now that Silverbane is dead, you are my only hope of saving our family from an eternity of damnation. The ancestor wolves demand it.”

“Are you a ghost?”

“No, a Shade.” Lane looked almost whole now in the shadow of the forest. “Part of the man I once was, cut off from my wolf until I accomplish my mission. Will you help me? Are you strong enough to do what must be done to cleanse the bloodline?”

Bryce nodded. He knew the weakness that had infected the family, and it had started with Josh’s mother.
