“If a new alpha isn’t found, Regina will have the pack cleansed.” The old hag didn’t look like she agreed with their enlightened leader. “The werewolves aren’t the worst allies to have when it comes to a fight. The Abenaki spirit talker isn’t the only one to have abandoned us. I haven’t heard from your mother in ages.

How is she?”

“She’s dead.” Andrea was starting to worry that her visions were rubbing off on the old hag, or vice versa.

“Of course she is.” The old hag shuffled back out of the room, grumbling all the way. “That doesn’t mean she doesn’t have anything to say, especially to you. The Shades that refuse to pass through the Gate do so for a reason. It’s a one-way trip for good reason, so they don’t leave this world until they are good and ready.”

“What’s on the other side of the Gate?” Andrea asked. The Gate was a subject that none of the Amazons talked about except in the vaguest of terms.
