Elaine sighed and closed her eyes. Sinking back into Silverbane’s chair, she looked smaller that Josh ever remembered seeing her. She was just as lost without her brother as the rest of the pack. She just hid it better.

“What do you want, Josh?”

“Information.”

“About what?” Elaine sat up straight in the chair.

The moment of weakness was gone, or at least buried beneath layers of duty. “In less than seven days, the candidates will be whittled down to two who will fight to the death. You do know what that means, right? Death. Killing. Ending a life means tempting the beast in every werewolf. Which one of our candidates will be able to stop at that one kill and go on to lead the family?”
