Chapter 20

“What the hell isall this anyway?” he shouted. “What are you doing?”

“You need to calm down,” Cory said quietly but firmly. “You don’t understand.”

Garner walked right up to the monitor that showed the prone figure out in the street. He pointed at it. “You’ve killed that guy.”

“No, we didn’t.” Cory’s voice was calm and certain.

“He had no heartbeat.”

“That wasn’t our doing.”

“What?” Garner’s mind reeled. “What are you talking about?”

“You need to calm down.”

Garner, who was still confused, didn’t at all like being told he should anything right now. Moreover, Cory’s face held a smirk.

For a second confusion and outrage combined to make Garner speechless. On the one hand, there was a need inside to dosomething, something physical. Like pulling down those banks of equipment for example. Or pulling these people apart. That, it seemed to him, would be a good start.
