They had rented an apartment not far away, largely because the newlyweds were each concerned about their younger siblings—and because Donald felt he needed to be around in case things between his parents got totally out of hand, for his sister’s sake.

About this time, James and Janet, the younger siblings themselves became friends. They had a common outlook, and shared interests in books and nature. They also commiserated about their respective families, and James began to feel protective of Janet.

A year later, the Barrie father died, suddenly, of cancer, and with his death, much of the strain went out of the Barrie home. There was a large life-insurance payoff, so the widow and her daughter were not destitute. At this point, Donald convinced his wife that they could safely move away, something he had been wanting to do.
