Chapter 5

“Time to wake up, Finn.” She went with Finn, too. “They tell me you have beautiful eyes. What say you let me see them?” This woman, strong in voice and manner, was also hell on wheels. Maybe not hell, but definitely on wheels, perched upon a rolling chair, she made her way from one and of Finneus Shea to the other quite deftly. “Says so right in your chart. Beautiful eyes. First responders noted it.”

I wondered what they’d pointed out regarding my face.

“How about letting me see them?” the woman said to Finn again. “Hi.” Her attention turned briefly to me, as she peeked around all the fabric still between us. “I’m Dr. Aluwahlia.”

I didn’t even attempt to spell that in my head. “Russel.”

“I’ll be with you in a second, Russel.”

“No rush,” I said.

She smiled, focused partly on me, the other part on Finn. “How’s the pain in your leg?”

“Better.” It was—kind of. “How is he?”

“We’re not sure yet.”
