Chapter 7

Cristela handed me the control. “Buzz us if you need anything else.”

Had I been able to think up a good excuse for moving my bed ever so slightly forward, I would have verbalized it. Unfortunately, a higher head did nothing to get me closer to the tickle curtain. It actually left me farther away from it. “Don’t you think he’s…cold?”

“You’re sweet.”

I grimaced when Cristela touched my face, just as I had when Dr. Aluwahlia touched my leg, this time, not due to pain.

“Being chilly sometimes brings them around quicker.” Cristela moved to Finn, and brushed his cheek, too. “Old nurse’s trick.”

“Oh.” I’d never heard that. Then again, I didn’t know any old nurses.

“You good?”

“Yeah. Don’t forget to take back the pills.”

She almost had.

“And thank you again.”

“You’re welcome, Russel.”

Finally, good fortune smiled upon me. Guitar case back in hand, Cristela swung it and herself around, serendipitously shifting the curtain while doing so, bringing it right to my palm.
