Chapter 10

“You really recognized my feet?” Finn wiggled the five exposed toes.

“I did.” I recognized them and the view up his gown. I wanted to ask if he was cold, but went instead with, “One sock, one bare foot…” I managed a nod in that direction despite my cone of shame. “It’s a unique look.”

“Yeah. I really should ask someone to take the other sock off.”

“Nah. I like it.” That was dumb. Why would Finn care what I liked?

“Hey.” The possibly authentic hippie’s song must have ended, because it seemed as if he just now noticed Finn. “You.” He pointed. “Why are you still here?”

“I…” Finn looked at me and audibly gulped, as if in trouble. “You left me here.”

The orderly’s stoic expression melted into a huge, happy grin. “You got me there. Someone from Ortho was supposed to come get you, though.”

“Oh. Not yet.”

“Hold tight,” he told Finn. “I’ll be right back.”

“No one is ever ‘right back,’” Finn said, his eyes cast downward, once we were alone. “Not that I’m complaining.”
