Finn was still smiling when I ended the call. “Beet greens?” he asked.

“The prettiest of all the greens,” I said, avoiding the feature on Finn that had inspired the comparison.

“Let me look at your eyes.”

I took a deep breath, then let him. “They’re just brown.”

“Nah. Nothing is just anything.”

“Really?”

“Really,” Finn said. “Like you see me in beet greens.”

“It’s stupid.”

“It’s not, Russel. It’s…it’s nice. It means you’re thinking about me sometimes.”

“A lot of times,” I admitted. “What do you see?”

Finn was still looking into my eyes. I was still letting him. “I’m not sure, but something, something that makes me feel a connection.”

“Yeah?”

“Definitely. When you like someone, you see them in things. I see you in my breath when it shows in the cold, because of how yours did when you looked at me through that very bus window back there. And whenever something tickles me, there you are. Those feathery yew branches right outside the bus terminal, you know the ones?”
