Andy and Adrian, in complementary green and grey suits, linked arms and waved at people on his other side. Adrian said to Colby, “I love the waistcoat.”

“So does Jason,” Colby murmured in reply. “We should get you one; it’d look lovely on you. By the way, we do want to have everyone over for a party and perhaps some sort of tabletop gaming session before you all fly out next week. We can plan the exact date later.”

“Sounds great. I’ve got more thoughts about fighting manticores. Andy thinks I’m overthinking strategies, but I like having battle spreadsheets.”

Manticores and waistcoats, Jason thought. His life. His friends. His Colby.

Leo was staring out at the sea of reporters again and chewing on his lower lip. Jason had more questions. He opened his mouth.

Someone shouted Colby’s direction, “Hey, did you hear the rumor that Liam Coyne’s in rehab?” and hovered expectantly for the reaction.
