Chapter 40

“I’m sorry, Jude. I really am.” Denise sighed. “We’re still thinking about it, okay? We will call you. But in the meantime, maybe you shouldn’t come here anymore. It obviously upsets you.”

He’d give them more time. But he would never give up. “I’ll be back,” he said, turning away for the road. “It’s my house!” he couldn’t help shouting as he dashed for the car.

After he’d climbed into the driver’s seat and slammed the door, he glanced down at his phone. He needed more money and fast, too. He’d been slacking off lately, spending too much time at Harris’s place. He was losing sight of his goal.

He picked up his phone and texted Leon.

Okay, I’m willing to take on new clients.

He drove off, leaving the little stone house behind, its image getting smaller in his side mirror. Ahead, the road turned into the highway and now he knew he was an hour and a half away from that city he hated so much. Seconds later, Leon replied.
