Chapter 48

Jude only stared at the sidewalk, arms crossed over his chest.

Harris took a step to him. “Hey…”

“Let’s just go, okay?”

“Yeah, all right.” Harris hesitated. What could he say or do to make Jude feel better? “Let me pay the waiter and I’ll be right out.”

“Don’t talk to that guy,” Jude said, without looking at him. “Please. Don’t make a scene.”

“I won’t.” Harris hurried inside and to the front desk. After he paid the bill, he walked across the dining room and spotted the man sitting with an older woman. For a second, he thought he’d shove the man out of his chair, but he’d promised Jude he’d behave.

Outside, Jude was waiting for him further away, by a streetlamp. “Are you okay?” Harris asked, nearing him.

“I wish I could get away from this city. I miss the country. I miss the quiet.” Jude seemed on the verge of breaking down.
