Emma jerked at his sudden disappearance, and Gideon had to tighten his embrace in order to quell the spike in her heart rate. She practically quivered. Nearly a minute passed with her staring at the empty space Jesse had just filled.

“Something’s wrong,” she whispered.

“It’s just this dimensional crap.” Gideon brushed his lips across her temple. Fuck. Even the beads of sweat on her skin reeked of her fear. “Everything’ll be fine.”

But he carefully blockaded his emotions anyway. Emma didn’t need to know he didn’t completely believe that. 11
