“Don’t,” she said, when Gideon tried to touch her. She pulled her knees up and into her body, hugging them with her arms. “Jesse’s right. And you know it. You’re just scared about losing us again.”

“Do you blame me?”

“I don’t think anybody blames you. But you wouldn’t sit back if it was a stranger. You’d be out there right next to Jesse, making sure Castelain couldn’t hurt someone else.”

“I’m not going to let anything happen to Emma,” Jesse said. “You know that I’m not.”

“And what about yourself?” When Gideon shot the question over his shoulder, the bleak look in his eyes nearly made Jesse change his mind. “Who’s going to make sure nothing happens to you?”

“I am. I’m going to make sure nothing happens to me.”
