Chapter 14

With a snort and a shake of his head, he turned the rest of the way and walked off. She stopped him on the second step.

“What do you know that I don’t?” she demanded.

Their eyes bored into his back. He angled toward her but kept his right side hidden, the blade he had tucked up his sleeve sliding into his grip. “I know you won’t move your dust up there. I’m surprised Circe didn’t let you know about the lockdown.”

At mention of her captain, Sheeryn jerked. Her left foot stepped back in anticipation of returning to her ship.

The distant whine of the frigate drifted along with the wind. Ares let the blade fly at the same time both Sheeryn and her bodyguard whipped around to see what was happening with their ship. His shoulder ached, but the knife found its mark, sinking into the guard’s throat with deadly accuracy.

Everyone moved at the same time.
