Her sudden stillness didn’t go unnoticed. Ares stiffened and lifted away, his eyes now slightly shadowed as they searched hers. She waited for the incipient pain, holding her breath in anticipation, but it never came.

“Why do I remember that?” she whispered, as if any louder would call the agony back.

Ares took a deep breath and studied her, as if he could look through her skin to see the workings of her mind. “Honestly, this is the most amount of time we’ve spent together at one place. Maybe that has something to do with it.”

“This hasn’t happened before?”

“No. But we’ve never had a chance like this before. Not rushed.” He began kissing her with each word. “Just the two of us.”
