Chapter 19

It was his life now—waiting. Waiting for time to pass, waiting for orders to come in, waiting to be allowed to talk to people back home.

Levi hated waiting.

“I’ll join you in the phone line. It’ll take hours to get to the front.”

Levi sighed. It would. Everyone would be calling home today. And it meant he couldn’t talk to Doc for long either, since everyone was waiting for their turn on the phone. “Are you gonna call someone?”

Gray looked as if he was considering it, then laughed. “Nope.”

Levi pushed him. “Idiot.”

He would miss Gray once he got home. Not nearly as much as he missed Doc, being here, but they’d become good friends, and not having him around would leave a hole. Gray could distract him on the bleakest of days.

Together they went to wait in line, and Levi didn’t care if it would take hours before he reached a booth, the need to hear Doc’s voice was as palpable as the ache in his heart.
