Chapter 20

She hadn’t heard anything in over a week, and it had been several days since Gabe saw her at the store. (“Really, Liz, she just seemed sad. She cried about Lucas and potatoes, for Christ’s sake!”)Liz flopped in her chair, all the muscles in her legs weak, and held up the envelope as if it was going to bite her.

Taking a deep breath, she resolved to get this over with as quickly as possible. She opened the envelope and pulled the letter out, distantly aware of Opie Taylor yelling something in the other room. The writing seemed blurred for a moment, until she blinked and realized she’d been tearing up.

My dearest Liz,

I know you think I’m certifiable, or worse, and I almost can’t blame you. Then sometimes I wish I could go back in time, keep my ideas to myself, or get us out of the house before Mama got through so many of her stories, just so maybe I wouldn’t have lost you. And Lucas, too.
