Mike shook his head when Sage relayed Brody’s comment. “Carrie called a lawyer as soon as we arrived at the station. Of course he told her not to say anything. If I were to make a guess, since Carrie’s plan with the trapdoor didn’t work, she decided to go directly for Elaine, until she saw Tonio up on the bridge. Maybe it was impulse, to scare Elaine so she wouldn’t talk about what she’d seen until she, Carrie that is, could come up with another accident—for her. Maybe she did it intentionally, to throw everyone off. Either way, the result was the same. Tonio died and Elaine, fearful she would be next, finally went to the police.”
“Then why wasn’t Carrie arrested?” Sage asked.
