Chapter 44

“No,” Milo admitted after a brief stretch of silence. Then he smiled a little at both Jensen and Kenta. “But I don’t have a choice. If she was guilty, I would have to do something about it.”

Jensen, who was seated on Milo’s right side, reached for his hand and squeezed it gently. “Give her a call now. Tell her that we need to talk to her. It’s highly important.”

Milo sighed softly as he nodded. Then he took out his phone and dialed Mariana’s number. He put it on speaker as the phone continued to ring, but Mariana didn’t answer the call.

“Maybe she doesn’t have her phone with her. You should try—”

Kenta’s statement was interrupted by the abrupt appearance of black clouds in the sky above them, which was immediately followed by the repeated booming of thunder. Then lightning struck a couple of times as the sky grew darker by the second. Kenta glanced out through the windows of the car. Milo and Jensen did the same.
