Chapter 14

At first, Mantika did not reply. He glared at them with hatred burning in his eyes. His beautiful face contorted into something altogether serpentine.

“What is your name?” repeated Karl.

“Ask him!” Mantika spat, pointing an accusing talon at Taar.

“I’m asking you!” bellowed Karl.

Mantika remained silent, looking away in obvious disgust.

“We’ll see what a night without sleep or food will do for you,” said Karl finally. “Men, guard him well. Ensure his night isn’t too comfortable.”

Mantika snickered.

The following morning, Taar, eager to press on with the business of disposing of the creature who had both attacked him and killed Tang, climbed down the ladder and marched across the village to where Mantika was tethered.

The scene that greeted him came as both a shock and a delight. He looked first at the occupants of the hut, who’d no doubt fled their home, and then at the two guards.

“What happened?” he asked.
