Jamey handed Kathleen a cup of coffee and a toasted bagel smeared with cream cheese that he had saved for her.

“I could definitely use the coffee, thanks,” she said. “You were asking where witches come from, Charley? Well, as far as we know, witches have always been part of humanity. Magic is really a term for a deeper knowledge of how the universe works,” she said, stopping herself before she got into full lecture mode.

“What kind of witch are you?” Charley asked again.

Kathleen smiled gently. “Do you mean am I a good witch or a bad witch?” Charlie grinned.

“She’s definitely a good witch,” Jamey said. He looked at her and said softly, “Dr. M, are you really okay? I’m so so sorry about Ronan.” He started crying.

Charley started to say something, but Jamey shook his head, no.
