Estelle continued. “We will have failed our purpose. And what about the old story of Loki’s key—that someday, the removal will be inevitable. Loki’s last joke. And we’ll no longer be necessary.”

Ella remained silent. A tree came crashing down in the yard a few feet away. She watched as a car smashed into the bridge over the lake. The wind swallowed both sounds. She touched Estelle’s arm and gestured toward the house.

Estelle kept walking, shouting to be heard over the wind as they struggled to make their way back inside. “We keep the old ones safe, but we also keep the mundanes safe. That part I don’t understand.”
