Chapter 75

The Mary Washington Hospital lobby was almost empty. A woman lay curled up under a blanket on a nearby couch, a stuffed canvas bag and suitcase at her feet. Henry looked behind him to see a glass wall and glass doors leading outside into what he guessed was a parking lot. At Patient Information he saw a sign that instructed people to either call a phone number or come back at seven A.M.

“When my grandmother had a heart attack they brought her here,” Jamey whispered as he pulled away from Henry and dropped his hand. “She died here.” He paused. “I’m sorry I just Jumped,” he added, looking down at the floor. “I just had to see her. I promise we’ll find Dr. M, or she’ll find us. She isa witch.”

“It’s okay; it’s your mother. You know, I’ve never been here. I’ve never even been in Fredericksburg before.”
