Chapter 14

“So, this is it.”

I’d watched him pack.

“I, uh, head for home right from work tonight,” he said.

“Be safe,” I told him. “All that driving after a long shift.”

“Yeah.”

We were out on the balcony, still on our phones, Kit all freshly washed and in his nurses’ scrubs, me looking like a scrub, dirty, disheveled, undressed except for a wrinkled pair of boxers.

“You’re beautiful to look at,” he said.

“Hardly.”

“Fuck, yeah. We’ll talk, but I’ll miss seeing you.”

“We have video.”

“We do, but there was something kind of wonderful about you being right there.”

“Something really wonderful, even if it was so close and yet so far. Nutt Butt’s here.” I had to say something else. “She wants to tell you…” I could barely get the word out. Jesus. How dumb was I being? “She says goodbye.”

“I’ll miss her.”

My heart skipped when Kit took his rainbow flag out of the bracket and started rolling it up. Was the shirt next?

“I’m gonna leave my shirt, if that’s okay.”
