Chapter 2

“What can you tell me about our heritage?” I asked. “When did our family come to the US from Scotland? Morgan and I are talking about nationalities and where we came from.”

“How could Morgan know where she came from?” Dad asked.

“What do you mean?” I asked. “You think because she’s black she doesn’t know?”

“Okay, then, where is she from? Maybe she knows the white part.”

I was ashamed to admit I had never asked Morgan that question, and told my dad that much. But this was important information to know.

“Do you think that maybe you and Morgan are just from two different cultures?” Dad asked.

I held my phone in front of me for a second, as if I could somehow see the look on my dad’s face. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m just saying, maybe you and Morgan are finding out that you’re just too different.”
