Maybe I should follow his lead, but you know me. There’s something about this whole situation that triggers every last one of my defence mechanisms.

Let me tell you about this afternoon.

“Okay, I’ll see you later,” Nick said, at the door. He was distracted, in a hurry to leave. He was meeting with Helen, his old boss, to discuss a few details of the Lund’s Blue Dinners menu.

I was sitting in the loft’s breakfast nook, working out some numbers at the computer. I glanced up from the screen. “Say hello to Helen for me.”

“I will.” He petted Esco’s head. “Be a good boy,” he told him. Or me. Not sure. “Love you, guys.” He was out the door and Esco sighed, trotting back to his mat and giving me a dejected look.

“I know, I know.” I laughed. “He’ll be back.”
