Chapter 46

Tonight, we were having a pretty good evening, finishing dinner and all, when for some reason, he turned on me. “What do you mean, you wanna re-open Split?” he asked, his green eyes darkening. “How long have you been thinking about this?”

I fiddled with my napkin, feeling the heat and tension between us. “I don’t know. A while.”

“Nick?” He cocked his head, scowling. “Is that what’s been keeping you up at night? Are you—are you serious? You wanna go back to the city and open a bloody restaurant again?”

“I’m good at it.” I couldn’t help giving him a defiant look. “It’s what I do best. And I miss it, you know. I’m bored out of my skull in this—”

“Because you don’t try to get acclimated! To get to know our neighbors—”

“Look, I don’t wanna fight with you.” I took a second. Chilled out. “All right? I’m just saying…I’m looking into the possibility.”

“No.” He shot out of his chair and started gathering the plates. “No way. No. Not this time.”
